Mission and Vision

The poultry industry is a fast developing sector playing a crucial role in global food security. The UK poultry broiler industry contributes to approximately £3.6 billion of the goods and services provided in the country. The poultry sector in China has shown tremendous growth producing around 7 billion broilers and 1.5 billion layers. Sustained growth in this sector in both countries is hampered by continued challenges from a large number of avian diseases. The five year grant funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Newton Funds towards the establishment of this Centre of Excellence for Research on Avian Diseases will enable scientists to carry out fundamental and applied research in improving poultry health in both countries.

Major aims of the Centre are:

Identify major avian disease challenges to develop joint research strategies to combat losses in both countries

Develop a platform for research partnerships between UK & Chinese Academic Institutions in avian disease research

Apply for joint research funding in both countries to strengthen the research base on avian diseases.

Developing future researchers in avian diseases through training of students and post-doctoral fellows.

Build plans for knowledge exchange and commercialisation from the joint research efforts.
